Thinking Of Spring

I know it's only the end of January but a person can think ahead. We have been having a warm winter this year so my mind goes to Daffodils. I did this watercolor rather quickly using a very loose method. I first wet the paper all over then I dropped in different yellows. After the paper dried completely I used blues and the yellows very wetly to form the flower. After it completely dried I used darker colors for shading. Please enjoy this little flower who always announces that Spring is here. Thankyou for viewing and commenting.

Yop Challenge For January

This is for our Year of Monthly challenges for January. The goal was to create and paint our own still life or landscape. I decided instead of landscapes to do my own still life setup. I used a white vase I owned, my husband's aunts silver and clementines on a white table cloth with dark bg. I really enjoy painting silver now, and think these spoons came out beautifully. This is another small painting I recently just completed. This is from one of my photos of Murrells Inlet here in South Carolina, this inlet is just south of Myrtle Beach. Big Red And Friends

I haven't been painting very much lately, I have been recuperating from surgery. But I did manage to do this little 5"by &7" watercolor. I took a photo of these three items delivered to our room with breakfast when we were on vacation. I am practicing on silver, glass and small still lifes. A Blue Mirror

Hi

Well I thought I would share with all of you what our YOP ( Year of
Painting) was for October. Thank you Ann for providing the photo. I am so happy with myself for actually painting this, I don't usually do cars or trucks. I spent a whole afternoon just doing the truck with the different glazes of red and then the darks in the window and on the front. Completed the rest of tre painting the next day. I did the background very undetailed because I wanted this truck to shine. I named this Blue Mirror because when I finished and looked, the side mirror was blue. It shined in the photo because this is the love of who ever owns it, so it should shine in a painting too. Please comment love to read them and thank you all for viewing this.

Good Morning to everyone. I wanted to share one of the paintings I completed from a wonderful week I had in Florida.
Our Painting Friends Forum got together in Florida last week. All of us spent a whole week painting, dining and having a great time. This painting is the result of a lesson taught by a wonderful artist and great friend from Texas, Mollie Jones.
What a treat it was to watch her paint and follow her suggestions on how to do this painting. Thanks Mollie again.
I call this Cactus Land since it reminds me of the game Candy Land with all the happy, bright colors I used. I hope this little painting brings a smile to all of you and brightens up your weekend.

Huntington Marsh

Good Morning Everyone I can't believe it's been almost two months since I last posted in here. Boy did this summer go fast. I've had company since the 18th of June, so very little painting done. While my granddaughters were here we made a visit to a local state park. This painting is from one of the marshes that I photographed. The only thing different is I changed the time of day. For the sky I used Cobalt Blue, Aliz Crem and Cad. Orange and carried this through into the water. For the marshes I used Sap gr, Cob Bl, Ultra Bl, Winsor Green ( Blue Shade), Quin Gold, Burnt Umber and Cad Yellow. I painted this the first time and really didn't like it. So I figured what the heck do it again using stronger doses of the same color and it turned out better than I thought.

This was painted for our Painting Friends Forum Year of Painting Challenge for June. I did this wet on wet with just a slight sketch to put the fish in. After that I just dropped the colors in. I like my blues and greens but would like a little more umph with my golds. This was a fun challenge and I hope those who view it are pleased with the results. Happy Saturday

I haven't been doing many watercolors lately have been concentrating on oils for the last couple of weeks. So on Thursday I sat my self down and decided to do this watercolor. I really enjoyed getting my brushes wet again and painting something that always makes me happy. I used Daniel Smith Quin. Coral for the rose and I like the pink it gave me. I'm also happy with the green I got using Cer. Blue and Winsor Green (Blue Shade).

A Study of Mollie's Strawberries

In our forum one of our Painting Friends Mollie gave us a wonderful demo on how to do Strawberries in Watercolor. This is my study from following her demo. I am so grateful to her because it got me back into watercolors and actually enjoy doing them again. I think I was a little heavy handed with the reds but otherwise I am happy with how it turned out. I drew my berries smaller than the original photo so I had to add something in the lower right hand corner. It was a napkin but I didn't like how it showed so I changed it into a cloth with blue and red stripes. I hope everyone is having a nice beginning to May. A Very Warm Painting

I know I'm not a daily blogger so please forgive me for this. At the moment I am taking an on line Oil Class for still lifes but also going to an Oil Painting Class every Wednesday. Last Wednesday we started working in palette knife only which is rather new to me. I've used palette knives before but with brushes. I was trying for harmony in this painting so I only used warm colors to achieve this. I hope you enjoy this picture and it gets you all in the mood for summer and the beach. Apples And Basket

We have started a Drawing Corner in our Painting Friends Form, because of this I have started doing simple drawings. I took two apples and a small basket I had and set up this still life. I used different graphite pencils from HB to 6B on Canson 100lb Bristol paper. Since I haven't drawn in a while I enjoyed doing this. Nice to just sit down with a pencil and paper and draw.

Mums The Word

Happy Sunday

We will be seeing Spring soon, now that March is here. And what better way to show it than with a painting of beautiful flowers in the sun. A couple of weeks ago I bought a bunch of beautiful white mums. I put these in a vase then outside for some nice photos of them in the sun.. I took some of them out of vase and put them beside it. I then put a sheet of white paper under vase and flowers for this composition. I really liked the shadow formed by the back lite from the sun. Shadows are done with Winsor Blue( Red Shade) and Perm Rose.
It's pouring rain here today so this does lighten it up. I hope it lightens up your day as well.

A Glimpse Of Spring

I don't know about anyone else but I've had it with winter. So I went and bought tulips that I'll plant outside. I had a wonderful time with these flowers. We have been lucky, the sun has been out the last couple of days, so I got some great photos of these with shadows. But I also had to fight with my Lily as she loves to eat flowers. I was having a hard time with her trying to photo them, finally Lily was put in the house, I closed the door to the screen room and had some private time with my tulips. Of course I had to leave Lily back out and to appease her I took some lovely photos of her too. I did this painting from real life with the tulips in front of me. Such a nice change from painting from a photo. So I have decided to buy flowers from now on to paint. I'm trying the new greens from my workshop and do seem to like how they act together. Viridian and Winsor Green (Blue shade) with New Gamboge for the highlights. The petals are painted using Permanent Rose, Raw Sienna and Winsor Blue ( Red Shade). Star Of The Show

This is the first painting I finished from attending a
Carolyn Gawarecki workshop on Shadows in Paintings.

I learned a lot attending it and found her to be an amazing and interesting teacher and well as person.
For this painting we wet it completely then stapled it to gatorboard, after it dried I applied masking fluid over all the area not to be shadowed. I then dropped in the shadows on very wet paper and let the colors mix together. After the shadows dried I removed the masking and worked from there.

Pale Pink Rose

Happy Thursday

I took another break from painting oils and did another rose in watercolor. There is a certain pink that I see people use for painting roses. However as hard as I try I can never seem to get this color down. I used a photo of Laura's Rose from Pilan ( Wet Canvas), thank you so much Pilan for this. I used Scarlet Lake and a little Permanent Rose for the flower, but still not the pink I wanted. However I do like the color and it doesn't go toward a rose or violet color which mine usally go to. I started very light and worked up the color with many different layers. I hope you like this rose as much as I did painting it. Please stop in and let me know what you think. Sometimes I get the urge to paint cats, something about them makes me happy. This is from one of my photos of my cat Lily. Some how or other she fits herself into this basket. I painted this the other day. Started with the two little shakers and seeing if I could paint metal. Along the way this little pansy came in and then the blue bottle. So all of a sudden I have this lovely still life. I think I did ok with the metal but would still like to see a little more silver look to it. This is small 5 1/2" by 8 1/2" on Arches 140 CP. I am so sorry I haven't been keeping up with this blog, as much as I should. But most of September and part of October my time has been taken up with my husband's illness. Thankfully now it is in the past and my Jim is doing great. I am a member of Seacoast Artist Guild here in South Carolina. On Friday the 7th Annual Fall Art Show and Sale held their opening. Surprise Surprise I won an award for my oil painting Bring in the Clouds. I was awarded Honorable Mention by judge Rose Metz, in her comments on why I won, she stated Beautiful execution, Loved the cloud work and Delightful colors. I am very proud since this is only the second judged show that I have entered. So I'm happy to share this wonderful news with all friends here. This is a photo of me excepting the award.

Sorry I haven't updated this as much as I should but I will try harder.
This is the latest watercolor that I have done. In our Painting Friends Forum we are learning the method of pouring. I did do pouring a while ago but only with landscapes. So this is my first using a photo of pears. I really enjoyed doing this painting. I started with 3 colors, Cobalt Bl, Windsor Yellow and Grum. Red. I masked the pears, then wet the paper and poured blue, then red. Let it dry completely removed masking fluid from the pears, then I used a straw to blow the masking fluid over the painting. When that was dry I wet the paper again and poured red first, then yellow on to the pairs. I followed by pouring more red,yellow and some blue. After it dried I used various other colors in the stem and shadows. When I look at the painting I feel like dancing. And the song "All Night Long "comes to mind. I really like this painting. So I think if when you look at this and hum this song, you will enjoy it too. Thanks for looking and please do comment.

It seems I taken a little vacation from this blog and haven't posted on it in the last couple of weeks. Well I have started painting watercolors again. Here is the latest one that I just finished. It is from a photo provided by my Painting Friend, Lil from WC ref file. Thankyou Lil and Wet Canvas. I painted this for a value study we are doing in our Painting Friends forum. I wish I had gotten the sides where the sun is hitting just a little lighter, so more contrast. This is watercolor done on Arches 140 cp, 11"by 14". Tuesday hubby and son were off playing golf and GD Kelcey was on facebook, so I had some free time. For the inspiration I used a photo from WC. I decided on no drawing for this painting. I started the painting at the top, using water to paint with then dropping in the color. Letting them run and bleed together. I enjoyed trying this looser style for a change. Please enjoy this summer bouquet.

Good Morning to Everone

   At this time of year in my area it seems mushrooms jump up all over. Everywhere you look you can see these little fellows basking in the sun.    They are mostly a lovely white color but I decided this time to do them in rich colors. So here they are facing the sun saying what a great day this is.
   I am having a wonderful week as my son Eamonn and my oldest granddaughter Kelcey are here. Not a lot of art being done but a lot a beach going with our with high temps.

       Sadly all my company has left and the house is very quiet. This painting I started last week after I watched a video on Youtube done by my Painting Friend Ann. I became so inspired to paint and the granddaughters were watching tv, so I sat down and started this. I finished it yesterday after everyone left. Light on My Rose

I actually had a moment last week to paint. It was one of the days we decided to take a time out from swimming and going to the beach. I looked through my photos and found this one. It showed one of my roses with lots of sunlight on it. I really liked the photo so I gave this one a try. I really don't know the name of this rose since when we moved here I found it out back in the jungle. I moved it to the front yard and it has thrived. Only bad thing is the deer love it as much as I do. I hope it brings some joy to everyone.

Lost and Found Pumpkins

For the last week and until July 3rd I have my two lovely granddaughters Katie and Haley staying with us. So my painting time is limited. However I did paint this before they came.
This was painted for the lost/found edges project challenge at paintingfriends.com with the beautiful reference photo provided Jaytee.
I really liked painting these pumpkins and very happy with the colors. This one has more lost edges than found. This was a great challenge to participate in , I learned a lot. When I lived up in Pennsylvania I had a lot of these bushes all over the property. The flowers came in a various shades of rose and violet with some white. Before we moved down here I went out and took a lot of photos of the different color flowers. I thought I would like to start a series of painting them. I finally decided to get started. I picked the white one as my first since these were my favorite. I used various shades of blues and rose in the petals and then wet in wet for the bg. It is painted on 1/4 sheet of Arches 140 CP . Bring in the CLouds

This is the latest oil I did for my Painting class. It shows beautiful clouds rolling over the marshlands. I loved doing this painting and it took me over 3 weeks to finally say enough and it is finished. One of the largest paintings I have done in quite a while. Small Pitcher

The last couple of weeks have been very busy for me and honestly I haven't painted. I did this little watercolor last week and only got around to posting it today. Violets are one of my favorite flowers and I can't wait til spring so I can pick them to paint. I have this little pitcher with violets painted on it. So I set up a little still life of the violets in the pitcher on one of my lace doilies that I own. Please enjoy and I hope as usual this brings a little pleasure to your day.

To paint this I decided to try Laurel Harts 2 wash method, this is from her book, Putting People in Paintings. I used 5 colors, on the first wash, Yellow Ochre, Carmine and Magn. Bl. Let it dry, then on the second I used Yellow Ochre, Ultra Bl and Trans Red Oxide.

       This is my next attempt for another wonderful challenge in one of the blogs I follow. This is for Windows to the Words started by James Parker, thanks James I enjoyed painting this robin. The day I painted this, there was an awful lot of robins in the backyard. I think all of them stopped for a rest here before they head North again.   Hopefully all of them made it and are safe. I have not been painting much these last couple of weeks. It changed this morning when I checked our Painting Friends forum for our Friday Foto. I believe I explained before that every Friday a new photo is posted for us to paint. So thank you to my painting friend Bev for providing a photo of a simple Seagull. I kept this very simple with just wetting the paper and dropping in the paint. I left the background plain, with some of the color just bleeding off the bird into it. I hope you enjoy him. Blue Bottle with Lanterns

Happy Monday. This is my latest oil painting that I finished over the weekend. I'm very happy with how this one turned out. I enjoy painting my blue bottles that I collect, and added a bowl of grapes (from Wet Canvas Ref Library) to the painting. I couldn't figure what to put in the bottle, then a light bulb went off and Chinese Lanterns came to my mind along with Honesty. I actually worked really hard to get the right spacing in here, which I believe I acheived. Next I really am enjoying how all the colors work with each other. I hope all of you enjoy this painting. Hi Everyone I thought I would share the finished painting from my oil class. We all picked this photo of a female swan swimming in a pond at Brookgreen Gardens. The one thing I did learn on doing this is how to start a painting from a photo. I also learned to use Liquin , so that we could work in layers. The swan was the last thing we painted. I am having a wonderful time interacting with the other artists and learning new painting tips from each. In fact I signed up for the next class starting in March. This is on a 9"by 12" stretched canvas with various shades of oil paints. I can't wait til its Spring again and the Azaleas are all blooming. Enjoy and please comment. Thanks for looking

Pansies Galore

Happy Saturday, though not very pretty here at the moment. It is a dark, dismal day with plenty of rain. Thankfully no ice or sleet as we are still above freezing. I thought this is a good day to show my oil painting that I worked on all last week. The blue pansies are from a photo of ones from last year and the yellow from a another photo. The yellow ones are in a litlle blue bottle. This blue bottle is from a photo of mine with crab apples. I put the crab apples in and it looked to Christmas, with the red and greens. So this is when I put in the yellow pansies. I still having trouble with space, as still too big for size of canvas but I think I did acheive some drama. Pansies have little faces so I hope they smile for everyone. Thanks for viewing and I appreciate everyone's comments.

A Very Simple Rose

Hi Everyone, it's been a while since I've posted in here. I've been working on an oil painting for the last week. I finally finished it yesterday, so I decided to paint in watercolors. I used a photo I had from Wet Canvas as a basis for this little painting. I'm trying to get looser and use more water in this medium. I'm happy with this and feel for this moment this is as loose as I can get. But I will continue along this line. I hope everyone enjoys viewing this and thank you. This is painted from a photo provided by aphiddew on Wet Canvas. Thankyou aphiddew. I very seldom paint animals but I really liked this photo and the way the sun plays into it. Hi Everyone I thought I would share my latest watercolor painting. This is from our Paintings Friends Friday Foto Challenge for this week. The photo was supplied by my Painting Friend, Lil, Thankyou Lil for such a lovely photo. I really enjoyed painting this one. Daffodils are one of my favorite flowers and I believe it shows. This is done on Arches 140 CP size 8"by 6". Colors used were Transparent Red Oxide,Aur. Yellow, Cad Yel Light, Quin Orange, Sap Green,Ult Bl,Perm Green Light and Dark,Mineral Violet, Indanthroe Blue and Pthalo Blue. I hope you enjoy this sunny painting and once again thanks for looking. Happy New Year Everyone

This painting is from a photo provided by my Painting Friend Susan. On our forum we have a Friday Foto where one member supplies a photo and then we have all week to paint it. I worked on this all day yesterday and finished it today. The main color in the flower is Cobalt Blue with touches of Ver Blue and French Ultra Blue. For the background I used Indathrone Blue, Hookers Green, Perm Green Deep an Yellow Ocre. My only concern with this one is that I wish I could of gotten the back ground a little darker.
I hope every one had a very happy Holiday Season and wishes for a wonderful 2010.

The other day I was experiencing sore throat and cough and not feeling very well at all. Their is one thing that I do that always makes me feel a little better. And that thing is painting roses. Since I did Kelcey I knew I had to find a photo of Katie. This was from a photo taken last Christmas. She has a strand of fake hair thus the red. I loved this because of the way she has her hands placed. I'm happy with both my colored pencil portraits that I have done. I really like the idea of leaving some of the paper in the piece. I also like trying to find shades that go with the color of the paper for the different tones in the face. Thanks again for viewing.

I have been trying to paint Kelcey in watercolors for the last couple of days. I was not getting anywhere and beginning to become frustrated. Yesterday I decided to try doing her in Colored Pencil. I am pleased with how this came out. I used the paper as part of the picture so not all covered by CP. This was done on Canson Pastel paper and I used the wrong side as it was not as rough. I hope you enjoy viewing this and comments are always welcome. I just started my other grandchild so will be posting it as soon as finished.

20 Minute Challenge Birds Nest

Trough a painting friend of mine I became aware of a wonderful blog dealing with 20 minute challenges. Thi blog is named the Twenty Minute Challenge started by Katharine Cartwright, thank you Katharine. It is taking a lot of discipline to do these every day. But once I have completed one I feel good. I am learning every day how to manage and do a small little painting or drawing in 20 minutes. I am also learning to draw from real life or what I see since no photos are allowed. Yesterday on our daily walk I spotted this bird's nest in a tree. Using only 4 colors and a quick sketch I completed this in 18 minutes. As always I hope you enjoy my work and please comment. Hi everyone, have finally got back to painting in watercolors. Taken a little break and doing oils for a change. This was taken from a photo used for our forum's monthly mindbender. To do this one I found one very small section and painted that. I had a lot of fun doing this one as I let the water control the action of the paint. This is very different for me but I like the results, with it being looser and the whites brighter. Thanks everyone for looking I really appreciate all those who comment also.

White Squirrel

Hi everyone. I thought I would show a photo of the baby white squirrel who lives and plays in my back yard. She (he ) is not an albino but a type of squirrel we have here in Pawleys Island. Happy with this photo since she scurries with the slightest sound. She was pawing at the screen on porch to get in, not good idea since Lily (my white cat) was waiting for her. I hope you enjoy her as much as I do.

Playing in oil

Hi everyone, sorry I haven't posted lately. I have been doing little still lifes the last couple of days. I have only recently started using water soluble oils and are still getting use to them. One of the things new to me besides the oils is the smallness of the canvases, both of these are 6"by 6", I have always used larger canvases. On both of these I painted the canvas very dark from a mixture of UB, Aliz. Cr, Sap Green, Cad Red and then worked out from this when it was dry. I wish I could take better photos but camera won't cooperate. It was sunny today so took both of them outside to photograph. Still shows too strong whites. Thanks everyone for looking.

Yesterday I did a little painting of a kitten from a photo provided from a reference post in one of the forums I belong to. I am happy with her (him). For the fur I used W/N Cer Bl and Daniel Smith Quin Burnt Orange, also used was Hol UB, W/N Raw Sienna and Grumbacher Indigo.
We are going to St Simons Island in Georgia for a few days on vacation. So I may not be in here until the end of the week. I hope to take some great photos and even get a chance to paint. I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

The painting was done for our Friday Foto Challenge, where one member posts a photo he or she would like to paint. Then we have the option to paint it also. I have recently began using Daniel Smith's watercolors and like the brightness in the paints. This was done looser than I usally paint but like the effect it has with the whites being left to show the light coming in. Thanks Cindi for sharing this photo with us.

I asked the photographer of this cat's photo if I could paint it and she happily gave me permission. Thanks Stephie for taking such a beautiful photo of your cat. I painted this using only Grumbacher's Indigo on Arches 140cp. Using this color brought back memories of how much we used India Ink and my dark fingers. I very seldom paint animals and am very proud of how well this came out.

An Autumn Card

On the one forum I belong to, we have been exchanging Christmas and Easter Cards. This year we also included a card for the Autumn Season. I sometimes struggle with a subject to paint. But once I thought of this, I really enjoyed painting it. My recipient received her card yesterday so I'm able to post this here. The person receiving my card this year was Desiree

I want to thank michelle at following the master blog...(http://followingthemasters.blogspot.com/). I decided to join in on this challenge. For my portrait I picked one of my favorite artists. I found a self portrait of Mary Stevenson Cassatt (May 22, 1844 – June 14, 1926)
I started with her hat and worked down.

This second painting is from a photo of her when she was older. I used a very limited palette and used a small squirrel mop with no drawing.

I really enjoyed doing both of these since I really love all her work.

There is so many good thing about living close to the ocean. One of them is all the different birds that are here, from the beautiful blue herons to the little ones who run in and out with the waves. I think my favorite though is the pelican. When I am on the beach nothing gives me more pleasure than watching a flock of them fly over. I was lucky once to have my camera and was able to take this shot. For this painting I used two Daniel Smith Watercolors. Phthalo Blue ( green shade) and Quinacridone Rose.

The goal was to see how many we could recognize by just the style. I knew a wopping 4, it was harder than I ever imagined. But it was also a lot of fun too.

Good Morning everyone and hope y'all are having a wonderful Friday. I have only been practicing painting people , so nothing brand new to show here. I hope this changes soon. I though I would show a painting I did a couple of weeks ago. This is my youngest Granddaughter Haley. For the painting I used a photo of her on the beach. She is looking into the sun thus the squinting and just out of the water. I am very happy with this portrait because I feel everything clicked in here. From the skin tone, how the hair looks, her eyes and how expressive this is.
I am going to start a Painting Friends challenge soon in oil and hope to be able to have it in here by the weekend. That is if it is any good, I have tried to do it in colored pencil and watercolor, neither turned out well.

I have now began to participate in The Different Strokes for Different Folks challenge. I have wanted to do this for a while, now that I have a blog, I went for it. I really enjoyed doing this painting and happy it turned out so well. I had to laugh though the cupcakes in the photo are the same I bought for Cindi's and I desert wishy washy challenge. I may in a different post show that cupcake I painted.

The weather here has turned cooler for the week. So this morning my DH and I decided to ride bikes. As we were riding I was thinking of all the beautiful things that I see on the way, but decided on this painting instead. This little painting I did today showing Jim as he rides ahead of me. Used Ulta Blue, Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna and Vermilion. I also have spent the day doing little sketches for Cindi and I 's next Wishy Washy project. I think I'm ready now to paint this photo that we picked. Well at least it will be the first attempt anyway.

Well Cindi and I challlegned each other to paint dark colors in this last wishy washy exercise. For our painting we picked this very lovely Namibian girl.provided by Patrick Hedges. Thankyou Patrick. It took me three tries to finally say this is the one I'm showing. I used Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna and Cadnium Scarlet for the colors. I think I did her justice and am pleased with her personality coming through.
